Morden’s third attempt at world conquest was over. You ride them.A farewell to arms-it was all supposed to have finished with that final battle. Plus, this game has camels with machine guns on their backs. Even with that annoyance I got used to the shaking the Wiimote for grenades and had a blast. It's a shame the controls were so gimmicky, and the obvious choices were left out. These games are out there, over the top, and too fun for words. This is a collection that puts the emphasis squarely on the games, and that's the best way to treat Metal Slug. There isn't much bonus material and the presentation is sparse but useable. The arcade setting lets you hold the Wiimote vertical and move it like a joystick, for the love of Gygax! That's supported, and the classic controller isn't? RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE! That's an unforgivable oversight from a game that uses every other control idea under the sun. Seriously guys, WTF? If you want a grenade button, you'll need to use the Wavebird. Even more aggravating is the fact that the classic controller isn't supported at all. The B button is within easy reach when the Wiimote is on its side, but that would have been a good solution, and so isn't used. The only way to do so using the Wiimote is to shake the entire controller, and most of the time I ended up throwing two. That is, until I tried to throw a grenade. You can use your Wavebird and that works great, but I was happy with using the Wiimote horizontally for most of my play sessions. It's a delightful way to control the game, but after the novelty wears off it also doesn't let you play with any hope of doing well. Also, you can go one-handed with the nunchuk if you like. Most of the controller options are worthless no one wants to tilt the controller to move back and forth it's a terrible way to control a game that needs a high level of precision. If you turn the Wiimote on its side you have everything you need. It's not a hard control scheme: you need the directional buttons, a jump, a fire, and a grenade button. The Wii version also gives you about two billion ways to control the games. The only thing is your walk is now a shuffle and your special weapon is a long-range vomit attack. There is a level where you can become a zombie and it doesn't kill you you continue playing. To an enthusiast, though, there are a million differences between "Suffer" and "The Grey Race." Same thing with Metal Slug: while at first glance it can all slide together, put in some playing time and you'll see how delightful the design and weapons can be these are games that are hard to put down once you pick them up. I have a friend who is a big Bad Religion fan, and while I like Bad Religion, it all sounds alike to me. Play the first Metal Slug and then go straight to Metal Slug 6 and you'll see that while the style has stayed the same, there have been so many tweaks and refinements to the formula that it's always interesting to revisit the series. This is a good version of this title, but not a great one.įirst, a recap if you haven't played any Metal Slug game: these are 2D shoot'em ups that feature crazy vehicles, amusing enemies and levels, and some of the best sprite art you'll ever see in gaming.

This collection has been released first on the Wii, but I plan on revisiting it when it's released on the PSP as well. When the original Neo Geo carts can go for over $200 each, this is much more economical for people who just want to play the games. I'd like to start this review by saying that getting Metal Slug 1 through X and then onto 6 in one package for $40 is a great deal.
