It's heavy so maybe not for solo backpackers. Not sure this alone would stop the smaller floaters which can put pin holes in nylon tents.ĥ. Galvanized steel has issues with zinc vapors.
SPARKBOX PORTABLE PLUS
Kinda pricey at 55-60 dollars plus shipping which is 10-18 dollars.Ģ. Didn't overly harm the draft though there was some reduction.ġ. Spark screen is robust and will probably never burn out.ĥ. Galvanized steel has more rust protection than not coated mild steel.ģ. I tested this out on a Kifaru Large stove but it should work fine on most tent stoves using 4 or 5 inch pipe just select the right size when ordering.Ģ. I will hit the remaining areas with a propane torch outside. Best to burn it first outside a shelter or leave the tent during the processing leaving the door open. On the down side zinc vapors within an enclosed space can't be healthy.
SPARKBOX PORTABLE PRO
The pro being even after the coating burns off my experience with galvanized pipe tells me there is still a measure of rust protection. Notice the zinc melting off the spark box. I need to burn this spark box alone using pine outside the shelter to see how good the large screen is alone. One pro is the system can run without other wire screens during start up and the shelter would still have a measure of protection. I think this system will work well with one finer mesh screen in place for the first few stokes or if there is extreme cold then adding another Kifaru wire screen once it gets rolling. Then again the wood was damp and winds very high I intentionally waited for a windy day to check for downdrafts. With both smaller wire Kifaru spark arresters in place there was a little smoke coming out the door when opened till a good coal bed developed. Still it worked.īurn! The Large K-stove and Riley stove combo really pumps out the heat. It 4-inch pipe fit the jack a little bit too tight. Anything which makes me monkey around with metal in extreme cold is a PITA so will probably take care of it.

I will add a ring of wider pipe or something to keep it 1/2 inch off the surface or simply ignore the issue. The thin metal of the K-stove gets hung up on the spark box rivet bumps. Male stove pipe parts reduce a bit in diameter at the end. Lets give it a GO! Here is the galvanized spark box on the K-stove. I think this and one smaller mesh wire spark arrester will stop all sparks but time will tell. The screen itself is built like a tank however the larger mesh makes me wonder if smaller floaters will be stopped? I didn't notice any in the test burn but was running the stove using the K-stove spark screen system as well. I believe this allows for more surface area because the spark box is more of a rectangle. Notice the spark screen goes in at an angle.
